Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski

Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” is the first Bulgarian institution of higher education. On December 8, 1888, the National Assembly decided to transform the pedagogical class of the First Male High School in Sofia into a Higher School. This decision came into effect on January 1, 1889, when Decree No. 159 was published in the State Gazette. In 1894, a new law for the Higher School was adopted and, by decree, it was transformed into a university. Since 1902, a holiday in honor of the university’s patron, St. Kliment Ohridski, has been established. The University’s 1905 Regulations recorded for the first time that November 25, the feast day of St. Kliment Ohridski, became the university’s patronal holiday. From early 1935, Sofia University officially began to bear the name of its patron. The building of Sofia University, constructed with funds donated by the brothers Evlogi and Hristo Georgiev, is one of Sofia’s architectural landmarks. Today it covers a total built-up area of 36000 square meters and contains 324 rooms, including 65 lecture halls with 6000 seats. The St. Kliment Ohridski University Library is the first university and the largest academic library in Bulgaria. Over time, Sofia University has become one of the leading scientific centers in the Balkans and a full-fledged European university. Today Sofia University is the largest and most prestigious educational and research center in the country, comprising 16 faculties with more than 119 degree programs and several independent units.
